Jesus was aware of the needs of the crowd and was going to use it as a teaching lesson for the disciples.
He knew what he was going to do before he asked Philip where they could find the bread to feed the crowd.
Jesus, as the Lord of Provision, illustrated with this miracle how God provides for our needs. He begins with what we have - five loaves of bread and two fish. Then he offers thanks to God for how he will meet the need - gave thanks. Distributed to the people until all had enough; they all got their fill, not just a taste. There was even enough remaining for each of the Twelve to have their own basket of left-overs.
What God had given to a little boy ended up feeding 5000+ people with lots left over. Truly, nothing is impossible with God.
He was seeking bigger crowds to witness his works. He also tested his disciples to see where they were at in their beliefs. He gave mor than he received. He took care of those around him.
Dave - good reminders: 1) a big part of growth is participating with God as he tests/stretches us, 2) God always gives back more than what he asks from us, and 3) God is not only interested in taking care of me, he wants to take care of all those around him - it is not just about me.
Jesus is such an amazing God! He sees a need, not just for food, but for more of Him that the people are wanting. In addition, He is stretching His disciples beyond anything they imagined. He is able to grow us and meet all our needs.
