The crowds were drawn to Jesus because of the signs he performed by healing the sick. There is a natural fascination of the miraculous by the human character.
The crowds interpreted the signs of Jesus to mean that he was the Prophet; the prophet like Moses foretold in Deuteronomy 18:18-20 who would come from their fellow Israelites.
People are naturally curious and are looking for something to believe in. After hearing about, and then seeing for themselves, believing became easier.
Dave - I often wonder if one of the reasons people are not drawn to the church like they used to is because we have change the message from "believe in Jesus" to "believe in US." Believing in Jesus is someone worth believing in - he always comes through and never disappoints. Believing in me or us, on the other hand, is most definitely NOT worth believing in - we disappoint and fall short every time.
The people were captured by what Jesus was doing. He was demonstrating a power and authority that had not been seen. They were following just like crowds tend to do. The people in this story also see what they want to see. They see the impossible and don't know how what Jesus asks can be done. That is very typical of us all.
